Interested in becoming a homeowner?
One of the most common misconceptions about Habitat for Humanity is that our houses are given away. But in fact, all of our homeowners pay for their homes through a combination of sweat equity (helping to build the house) and a low, zero-interest mortgage to our non-profit. You may qualify to pursue homeownership through Habitat for Humanity.

DO I QUALIFY?
I have been a resident of or have worked in Independence County or the town of Cave City for a minimum of 6 months.
I have a housing need. My current housing is inadequate and/or the conditions are substandard. (Examples of substandard conditions: lack of heating system, leaking roof, unsafe flooring, et cetera)
I have the ability to pay. I do not have excessive credit card debt or multiple bills in collections (excluding medical debt) and I have had stable income for the last 12 months.
I will partner with Habitat putting in 350 hours of “sweat equity” building mine and my neighbors’ homes. I understand that this partnership may involve 20-30 hours per month of extra work in addition to my regular employment.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE PROCESS:
Houses are built, then sold to the selected family for the cost of the build, with no interest charged on the mortgage.
Homeowners and volunteers build the houses under trained supervision, cutting the cost of the homes back significantly. Individuals, corporations, faith groups and others provide financial support to assist our organization in the build.
Homeowner families are chosen according to their need, their ability to pay a mortgage, and their willingness to work in partnership with our organization. Habitat for Humanity does not discriminate according to gender, race, religion, nationality, or other protected classes.
